Whenever I think of the past, it brings back so many memories - Steven Wright

[COMMENT/PROFILE]My wife Deb and I spend a couple of hours in San Pedro listening and watching Phil Hulett and his friends record their weekly podcast.

Just posted
Phil Hulett and Friends
Bugs, Bribes and Naked Housekeeping
Listen Live 3-5pm Pacific time Thursdays on the live stream. On today's show: Bribing women to get a date, The Bug Man talks termites, flying ants, bed bugs, cockroaches, rats and more, plus the Halloween fun, unexpected stories, news, sports (World Series) and more. Lot's of laughs in this episode.

Phil told me that he started in promotions at KLOS in the early 80's, then went on to produce shows at KABC like Ken and Bob, Toni Grant and Michael Jackson. His career is extensive, and for the last 15 years is currently working as Anchorman/Morning Host at KFWB News/Talk 980.

He's the Public Address Announcer Anaheim Ducks for the last 17 years. He's a Co-Founder of KNAC.COM, a voice over artist, and a college professor. His resume is as long as my arm. Check out the list on Linkedin. He's a total broadcast pro and from what I saw, it's easy to see.

Watching Phil behind the mic you can tell he's been doing it for a long time. He's got typed pages highlighted and is obviously very organized and has put a lot of thought into his work, and this is just a podcast. A two hour show like this with a whole bunch of topics and a couple guest callers takes a lot of work and planning.

One of  Phil's "Friends" on the show is the lovely Jennifer Bjorklund. Jennifer is a veteran broadcast news anchor and reporter with 27 years in the business, the last 15 of them in Los Angeles television. Who doesn't recognize her face? It was a thrill meeting her, I think she's a huge part of the show.

Then we have Jay Campadonia who's big voice and big laugh is a lot of fun. Cool personality and he adds great color. And tenacious Sports Dude, Karlo Sy Su, who's got the big smile and knows his sports. This podcast could easily be on the radio in any city in America.

Recording location: San Pedro, CA

That upstairs door is the entrance to The LA Radio Studio, in the Port's of Call Village in San Pedro. It's available for use, contact Mike Stark. Just behind this building is a huge ocean channel where giant container ships and huge cruise ships travel, it's the port of Los Angeles. They can be viewed out a large window while in the studio. A very unique location for a studio.
The wonderful analog studio equipment was acquired from ABC Radio Network Burbank when they went all digital. The owner Mike Stark told me they were going to throw it away. This studio is a typical one room studio and control room separated by glass. You can tell they put a lot of money into building this very high quality studio.

Thanks very much to Phil Hulett and Friends for allowing us to hang and experience the show, it was great fun.

Outside the studio window is a huge cruise ship going by.

Great fun interview with Moon Zappa. Marc Maron and Moon have known each other for years. Almost sounded like they might be an item now that Marc is single again. Love hearing what her growing up was like in a house in Laurel Canyon with her Dad Frank. She said he never raised his voice. He was always funny and very dead pan. Lots of musicians around the house. Frank was a workaholic that was not doing a lot of parenting. Moon has an 8 year old daughter is is newly divorced. She tells a story about how KD Lang got her to quit her job at VH1. I could see her doing stand up, very funny. Worth a tumble.

If people in the media cannot decide whether they are in the business of reporting news or manufacturing propaganda, it is all the more important that the public understand that difference, and choose their news sources accordingly - Thomas Sowell

[COMMENT]I saw this article over the weekend about [Mark Levin]. Big long article. It might be the most important article about conservative Talk Radio ever, and I'm not kidding.

Radio’s Mark Levin Might Be the Most Powerful Conservative You Never Heard Of
by David Freedlander from the Daily Beast. Oct 19, 2013

I'm not sure why they would put in that line about "most politically influential person you've never heard" all conservatives that are paying attention know who Mark Levin is. In my opinion if you hear Talk Radio all day and you hear this and you hear that and it has gotten confusing over the last couple weeks, you go listen to Mark and you are set right. This man is the standard for what's really going on. He knows what he's talking about and does not mess about. He is not in it for fame or recognition, he wants to present ideas and facts and fix this country. I have never heard a man in my life that cares more about this country than Mark Levin. And it's wonderful to hear that he's actually getting pointed at and is a weather vein and the go to person for all talk show hosts. You can hear it listening to Rush or Hannity or others, they use words and repeat things that Mark has said. They even quote him. Does anyone know or remember, that his firm The Landmark Legal Foundation was responsible for exposing abuses in the IRS this year? He did that. He does not ever drive it home and insist on getting credit for that. Even though he deserves all of it. The standard for conservatism and the things we all should be driving toward is what Mark Levin talks about on the radio and in his books. The founders designed this country in an elegant and beautiful way. It made sense then, it makes sense now. Blood was shed and our founders worked and sweated and put their heart and soul into our country and we are obligated to preserve what they did. And that's the only thing driving Mark. And I'm on board, all the way.

This is a very long article but a must read about a man that is the rudder for truth for all of Talk Radio in my opinion.

[RADIO]Wow look at this. On Talk Radio One at 10 am Saturday, Los Angeles radio icon [Sweet Dick Whittington] talks about all things radio.

Thank you Don Barrett for the heads up.

Sweet Dick Whittington fans will be thrilled to know that at 10 a.m Saturday morning Steve Spierer talked with Dick for an hour and 10 minutes. They talked about all the great bits he did and played a couple clips. One of the clips was Dick taking cover during an after shock of the 1971 earthquake. Dick sounds good enough to be doing a show today. Not sure why he's not. He was very gracious and polite and just wonderful. This man's contribution to talk radio and morning drive radio is huge. I would say most people have no idea who he is, but he left a huge mark and a big legacy. What a treat to hear those pipes again. Thanks Dick!

Seismic Shifts Remake the Radio Industry
From All Things D
As change happens all around them, radio broadcasters tout the health of their business and how the competitive threat of Internet rivals is overstated. I understand the need to present their case to advertisers. But their sales narrative, an echo chamber of their own making, cements complacency and fosters lack of innovation.

From NPR's Weekend Edition Sunday
Drinking To 'Numb,' Women Gain On Men In Alcohol Abuse
A new book by Ann Dowsett Johnston

Here is a little back and forth I had with the great Lisa Ann Walter on facebook this weekend.

Lisa I applaud you for doing a show "All Breast Sunday". I'm with you on the cause. Unfortunately no extra people are tuning in and you probably have less listeners than usual. I turned off the radio. A Sunday radio show is not about what ever female cause you want to promote. I can't believe Robin would let you do this. I'm a guy looking for entertainment, that's what your radio show is about my dear. I'm not sure what your thinking here.
She replied back to me:

The Fabulous Lisa Ann Walter:
Show I think you are a bit confused, dear listener - First you say you applaud the choice...then you slam it. You also seem to have a secret knowledge of numbers *while* the show is actually happening - it's just conjecture isn't it? I don't think of Breast Cancer as a "female cause". That's pretty myopic - hon. Breast cancer is affecting younger and younger women - no less than a quarter of my friends have been diagnosed - all in their 40's. It's a terrible and rampant disease. That you reduce it to a "female cause" is like saying that discussing sports is a "male cause" and should only be reserved for men-only shows/stations. and still confused by your congratulations followed by you explaining to me what my "show is about". If anyone knows - don't you think it's me?

And my reply back to her:

Lisa the point is, an entertaining show that I would want to listen to on a Sunday afternoon. You are doing a boutique show. As a guy, do you think I would want to tune away from football to hear your show? Don't get me wrong, I love you, you are a great host. But you are not doing a show that I would want to tune into. Consider personal stories and funny stuff and food. It's not a high ratings show Lisa, it's Sunday. As a guy why would I tune in to a show about breast cancer? I wish these people the best of luck, I really do, but come on. Let's hear about the twins and what went crazy this week in your life. That's what I want to hear :)))

Mankind are governed more by their feelings than by reason - Samuel Adams

I had to comment on this email from [Michael Benner], former talk show host from KLOS. I used to stay up late many many nights listening to his great show "Impact" in the 80's The email appears, and you can read it on

He says: I believe we're witnessing a cultural shift away from the anger, hostility, and no-so-veiled racism and misogyny that's become the hallmark of right-wing talk radio in the past two decades. As you can see Michael doesn't listen to right wing talk radio, or he would know that that comment is just completely false. Just boring talking points from the left, really boring, and bringing up race only points back at you my friend. He says: Americans are becoming burned-out, turned-off, and increasingly intolerant of the angst, really Michael, how would you know? Life is about all the range of emotions, anger, happiness, love, passion, depression, stress, etc. Gradation Michael, not black and white, I get it. I'm sure Michael would call me a reactionary.

***Michael also called the good people of the Tea Party that have the values of our founders and care about Liberty, and freedom and small government, tea baggers. Really a vile comment, and a really vile image. He said this on Twitter.

He says: Young people especially are turning to Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert and Bill Maher for their ‘news.’ Yea stupid people that only want the liberal side of news that is skewed to the left and are just flat out too lazy to explore all news sources. He says: Ever wonder why there's no levity, no humor, no happiness, nothing that feels good in right-wing radio and tv programming? See he never listens to conservative radio.... ever, this comment makes no sense and is not at all true. He says: I believe the pendulum is swinging back toward a desire to hear positive, solution-oriented talk and news programming that is both honest and true. That comment is Talk Radio. I know you think you have the wisdom of the ages but you are living in a bubble Michael, you should have stayed a talk show host, you were really good, and entertaining.

I have listened to radio my whole life and to characterize it the way Michael Benner does is just plain not true. It's just a liberal point of view that has been manufactured for an agenda. Hey Michael this site might appear to be a Tea Party fan site, I'm not a member, but I am a liberty loving American conservative. I'm very angry about a lot of things but nobody laughs more than I do. It's a balance. I'm a really nice guy, just ask my wife :)

[COMMENT]Exasperating radio listening to this total BS in Washington. Some fun things Monday morning listening to a live broadcast of AM 870 The Answer morning team, [Brian Whitman, Elisha Krauss, and Ben Shapiro] from Columbo's Restaurant in Eagle Rock. Brian was having a blast doing all his impressions and having a crowd of people laughing their asses off. I have not been able to find any photos as of yet. To see Brian in person do his impressions is a treat, and I have. They had breakfast for everyone and also had the owner on the show. I have yet to make it to Columbo's, been meaning to for years. Pretty fun show, I wish I was there. Then I heard a little about [Doug McIntyre] doing the LA Aid's walk, or being dragged by wifey to do it ;), she raised 10k!. And [Terry-Rae Elmer] doing her MS bike ride (160 miles) where she raised a whopping 100K. Bravo. [Larry O'Connor] sitting in for Geraldo who's gone more than any host in recent memory. I would much rather hear Larry O'Connor anyway, who was sick as a dog till a day or so go, but sounded fine today. How about just give [John Phillips] the slot! I also was surprised to hear that [Rush] was doing his show from LA, all week. He sounded a little off his game being in a strange studio. I don't think he was at KFI when he said that he was in a secret undisclosed location. He probably was at the Premier Network studios (owned by Clear Channel) in Sherman Oaks. This is where George Noory does his show. It's in a big bank building on Sepulveda and Ventura. For me it might be a week of podcasts and audiobooks because hearing about this completely fake crisis in Washington is just too much.

[PODCASTS]This is really a radio story but I think of [Leo Laporte] being more on the Internet with his Twit Network even though he does two shows on the weekend on radio. Leo Laporte mentioned on his Sunday show that he just bought a house in the country. That probably means Napa. He was talking to a guy about Ham Radio. Leo said that he would be putting up antenna and getting on the air at the new house. I would wager that Leo will be building a studio in this house and maybe doing his KFI show from there. Maybe the brick house is getting a little too busy with people, or the weekend show would be easier to do in a home studio without driving into Pataluma. Also I didn't hear all the context but he mentioned buying a diamond ring. His girlfriend is his business partner and CEO of TWIT,  Lisa Kentzel, maybe they are getting married? That could be what that whole European trip they just got back from was about, maybe he popped the question. I don't see anything on the web about this. I could be totally wrong.

For people that love and follow Marc Maron, you know that he writes a blog almost every week. In my case it's emailed to me. He has been in a new relationship for a while now with Jessica. He writes this:
The reason that it has been awful is that my relationship with Jessica has ended. I ended it. We had big plans and hopes and it’s over and I am heartbroken and very sad. As you know I am not the easiest man to live with and we had a very lively and passionate and difficult relationship at times. We have been trying to make things work and move forward but it just became too hard and too toxic. It takes two to toxic. I love her very much and I care for her more than anyone I’ve ever been with and I couldn’t make it work. Ending a relationship with someone I still love and care about is the hardest thing I’ve ever done and there’s guilt, sadness, disappointment, heartache, loneliness and anger that I am dealing with and will deal with for a while. I know it was the right thing to do. I want her to be happy and have the life that she wants to have. It just can't be with me. She is a great person with a big heart. I have work to do on myself and I want to be happy as well. I just couldn't do it in the relationship we had.
