Radio is a bag of mediocrity where little men with carbon minds wallow in sluice of their own making. - Fred Allen

[COMMENT]Another week and we are deep into summer here in the "Southland". Very important stories happening while most of local radio is talking about San Diego Mayor Filner and Weiner and his wife. All kinds of non-sense. [Doug McIntyre] said this morning that he loves it because it's fodder for talk radio, it is. But as I have said many times, I will... turn the station or turn off the radio. Just because the local news or main stream media is talking about it non stop doesn't mean anyone other than TMZ fans or dancing with the stars voters want to hear about it. I know I could not care less than I do right now. Meanwhile [Mark Levin] is talking about how ObamaCare will end the 40 hour work week. That will destroy this country. Or how about how the fact that IRS is going to run your life and is totally out of control. Oh sorry that must be a phony scandal. And to make it beyond ridiculous, the IRS employee union doesn't even want ObamaCare. Thank god we have people like [Hugh Hewitt] who are paying attention to what's going on around the world. He wrote a piece today for the Washington Examiner called:
Mainstream media ignorance of Muslim Brotherhood looms

As a chronic listener to talk radio for over 25 years I have learned that I need to pick and choose when to grab that radio knob tightly, and what action to take to keep me entertained and sane and informed. It's all shiny from use.

[RADIO]Get ready for this in Los Angeles
Marconi Radio Award-winning personality Edgar “ShoBoy” Sotelo will now be heard in Dallas as CBS flips one of its signals to Hispanic. La GRANDE 107.5- FM brings together some of Spanish radio’s most talented on-air personalities with the very best in Regional Mexican music, according to PD Jimmy Gonzalez. "It all starts with ‘ShoBoy En La MaƱana.’ Edgar’s positive energy and enthusiasm set the tone for the entire station.”

Well I gotta say I do not know who [Kidd Kraddick] is. Sound's like a great guy, well liked and did charity events. He died at age 53. He was on the air in Dallas for a long time. Rest in peace.

Back in the day of 97.1 The FM Talk Station Sam would come into the station and BS with [Conway and Whitman]. He was a card player and invited the guys to come to his house to play poker. He was funny and told some great stories. Conway would always ask about his money, he has a couple hundred million and that he always carried a wad of about 5 grand in his pocket. He loves Las Vegas and gambling. He was friends with [Norm McDonald] and others. This story about him being so sick is just a shock. That old cliche about how you can't take it with you is not so accurate in Sams case, his wealth will live on in all his causes.

Back in May Sam was on with [Marc Maron].

I call BS on this. Posted on the Daily Beast Sunday night.

[Limbaugh], [Hannity] To Lose Radio Deals The second largest radio broadcasting company is reportedly ready to dump two of its most conservative talk show hosts. Cumulus Media will be dropping Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity by the end of the year, according to an industry source. That would mean that two of the biggest right-wing voices on the radio won't be available in 40 major markets across the country come 2014. The pair seems to be caught up in contract negotiations between Cumulus and Clear Channel, the company that distributes the shows. The companies have had tough negotiations before, but it looks like this time they won't be able to reach an agreement.

Rush this morning said that "You are being treated to a public business negotiation"

Poor baby.

[HEARD THIS][Dave Williams] - Brains are weird, aren't they? A moment ago I said on the radio, quite rightly: "Sports, coming up next on 570 KLIF!" But, I came *THIS* close to saying, "...on Talkradio 790, KABC!" -- Where I haven't work for years and wasn't even thinking about it.

Radio Rewind: This is the only photo I have of myself at the third commercial radio station I worked at in Maine as a DJ, WIGY-FM. It was a stand-up board arrangement, which made it easy to dance to the rock songs we were playing in the late 70s. I usually worked the night shift, and it's the last station I worked at before moving to Los Angeles.

“Democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet that did not commit suicide.” - John Adams

[COMMENT]Today many hosts just ripped the president's speech to pieces. I guess we are now in a place where it's OK to just lie though your teeth, right into the eyes of the American people. It's also now becoming very easy to play clips and read back things that the president has said to completely debunk what he's saying now. I hear a couple hosts say that he is lying. For many years nobody was using this word, now it's all the time. To talk for an hour and 6 minutes and think that the America people are going to just stop what they are doing is just soo arrogant. I guess half the country are willing to do that. I heard some clips and I just hear Whaa whaa whaa whaa, like the Peanuts parents. I'm just a working stiff and I can see that he's just soo full of it. Funny how people just deny things because they have an agenda. A caller today said "why does it matter?" talking about Anthony Wiener. The guy is a predator, but hey he'd make a good mayor of New York. Ethics, principals....out the window. This society is in deep trouble if we find this kind of thing acceptable. Check the McIntyre quote below, he's spot on.

[RADIO]Looks like Clear Channel is pushing this new brand as hard as they can. iHeart radio has something new, iHeart Talk. After doing a search on several shows like McIntyre in the Morning, The Morning Answer, Marc Maron, came up empty. I did find Mark Levin. When iHeart radio first started it was Clear Channel stations only. They have expanded to lots of other stations and shows. Looks like they are trying to dominate in this arena, we shall see. Big corporations like Clear Channel doing this make me shy away from it. Apps like Stitcher and TuneIn I like much better.

Always mysterious, [Art Bell] hints at a return to radio.
Art repeatedly suggests on social media that he’s unhappy with new host [George Noory’s] broadening of the show’s topics. “I am profoundly sad at the current state of the show,” he says. I've never liked Noory and I think if Art came back he would crush him in the ratings, or maybe they would kick Noory to the curb and bring Art back. Their are tons of people out there that would love to hear Art back. I'm one of them. He's a great and compelling host. And he's over in the Philippines living a new life, with a new young wife and a new daughter. I remember him saying that he was living in a high rise condo and has an area in the condo that is his studio. He did fill in a few times on Coast from there. Lately I was wondering what had happened to him. I did not hear about this back in January. I'll be looking for articles in this.

Arbitron has released its "Public Radio Today - 2013" report, profiling the 32 million people who listen to public radio each week.

Caller to the [Mark Levin] Show says he came home without a scratch from Iraq but took four bullets in the Fort Hood shooting. An amazing call.

Also this week, kudos to [Doug McIntyre] for just hammering at the story about city hall allowing the Armenian Cultural Foundation to lease Fire Station 83, a surplus City owned property located at 5001 North Balboa Boulevard in Encino, for $1 a year. With all the crap that goes on in city politics Doug somehow finds the energy to go after these jack balls and get some answers. Bravo Doug.

[SEEN ON THE ROAD]I was relocated to the Orange area on my new shift at work. I took my lunch break in Old Town Orange and then drove around Chapman University. This is where [Hugh Hewitt] teaches law. I gotta tell you, this campus is soo beautiful. I had no idea. And it being next to Old Town makes this area of OC just a gem. It's stunning how cool this area is. I want to live in one of those houses, hundreds and hundreds of beautiful old houses line these streets. Small town America still exists right there. Go there, great places to eat.

They wanted to buy some merchandise from Rushs' Ice Tea company "Two if by Tea". I guess the librarian helped these ladies for 3 hours. It turned out that the stuff they wanted was sold out. Rush got the email from the librarian. They should just call into the show, Rush would probably give them all laptops or iPads.

Forgiveness is the fragrance the violet sheds on the heel that has crushed it - Mark Twain

[COMMENT]Radio is dryer than [Noel Coward's] memoirs lately. 10 days later and I'm still having to turn off the radio when I hear them talking about that trial. Then today it's all about the royal baby. Give me a friggen break, will you? I'm a chronic listener as you well know, and maybe I just need to "sample" what's on instead of listening all day. I'm in the car, what else can I do? Then we have [Geraldo Rivera] tweeting a simi nude photo. What in the hell is the matter with him? He tweeted this on Monday night:

If my pix is so offensive to media critics, why do they keeping flashing the damn thing over & over? "Isn't this terrible? Let's see it again"
I hope ABC fires his ass and that crap ass radio show that nobody listens to. Ever heard of [Anthony Wiener?] Seriously stupid.

Funny, you know this is happening because of the recent ratings. He got higher ratings than [Bill Handel] on KFI. He probably said that exact thing in a meeting. He will be back, he's a money maker, how can they not work this out? Just this also, I have never heard his show.......I don't speak Spanish!

The Freedom of Friday

[COMMENT]Change. I'm back to a morning shift and will be up very early and listening. Trying to figure out when I will be able to write this blog that I'm so attached to writing now. It usually takes me a couple hours to gather material and write this. And maybe this next week I will hear something other than hosts talking about the Zimmerman trial. Enough is enough. We have so many other things to talk about. Sliding into summer lots of hosts here and there, taking days off and some cool hosts filling in. This may be a week where I have listened to less talk radio than I have all year. The saturation with this trial is just ridiculous. I don't think I have ever seen a week in talk radio like this. Even hosts that I like, like Rush talking about Rachel Gentel two days in a row. Talk about a waste of airtime. The voice of reason is still Mark Levin. Mark just does not tow anyone's line or care about being criticized. I'm hoping that people in radio are talking about a future of radio that would include more entertainment. This all politics all the time needs to be tamped down. More Phil Hendries, more comedians. Monique Marvez sitting in at KFI was really great. I was with a female co-worker all day today and she has no idea what is going on in AM radio or podcasts or anything. It amazes me when I talk to people like this. I think AM political radio is stigmatized. It's unfortunate. I think it's been such a huge learning resource in my life over the years. But I think it needs to change. Entertain me!

Better than reality; more than make believe: radio’s re-creation of Baseball
Posted on July 19, 2013 by Bob Mason
I’m not making this up: every time a player hit the ball, the announcer whacked the block of wood. He wasn’t just announcing, he was re-enacting; no, more than this, he was recreating, or actually creating a new representation of the game, in a newly created dimension of reality, all the while passing it off to his audience as the traditional game itself, the old ball game.

The guy who did this 1957-1959 was named [Les Keiter], a legendary sports announcer who was perhaps the only person ever quite up to pulling this off. Keiter was endlessly enthusiastic about everything. When [Willie Mays] tripled and slid into third ahead of the throw, Keiter would trumpet in supremely thrilled satisfaction: “He beat the ball, He beat the Ball!!”

Not My Circus Not My Monkeys - Polish Proverb

[COMMENT]This is an unusual week where I'm only able to listen to radio in the morning. I'm in training this week at my job and can't listen to any radio all day. Perfect week for it too. Who in the hell is the person that leaves the radio on during this all Zimmerman all the time stuff? Total coverage, total saturation of a topic is something that the local stations thinks is great. They are covering it so YOU get all the news and updates there are. Who cares? It's over and a local station says Zimmerman is "In hiding" ...makes it sound more dramatic I guess. One good thing is we can see all the foreheads in this town that don't have a clue. Remember that line from the Dating Game........and here they are!

This has got to be one of the most unbelievable LA photos I have ever seen. Never in my life would I think that some 200 protesters would just walk down a freeway. Last time I checked, walking down a freeway is not kosher. LAPD is giving these people wide latitude. They didn't even do this during the LA riots or during the OJ case. This is a good reason to put up more cameras to really ID these people and prosecute them. And the protests continued last night. Tonight the LAPD says they will not be putting up with any crap and more arrests will be made and some real potential for bad stuff tonight in the Crenshaw area. How about......lets move on with our lives?

People who see life as anything more than pure entertainment are missing the point - George Carlin

[COMMENT]On Friday [Jay Leno] interviewed Eliot Spitzer. To be totally honest, I think he's a scum bag, Eliot that is. I watched the interview because I've never seen or heard this guy up close. He's a piece of work to think that he can be the Governor or the AG of New York and break the law spending $80,000 on prostitutes and then come back into public life to be elected again. Jay asked him "how could you be soo stupid to think you could get away with this?" To the point and blunt. He didn't mean he thought he was stupid, just how is it possible him being a law enforcement officer and then breaking the law. Jay mentioned that he enjoys following politics and I know he listens to talk radio. He's called in a few times to some shows and heard he used to listen to Conway on 97.1. Prediction. When Jay is done with the Tonight Show in December he will continue to do his stand up all over the country and maybe go to another network like Fox but I think he may consider doing a weekend radio show on KFI or some other local station. I would love to hear him do a show. He doesn't need the money, but I think he likes to get out of the house and do something besides go to his garage everyday, who knows I'm just speculating. Anybody thought about this? If Jay Leno called KFI and said give me a show, they would. Or maybe he would sit in with or for some other hosts. I think he would be good at it. A political/entertainment show on the radio with Jay Leno? I'm there. Just a thought.

“Nothing travels faster than light, with the possible exception of bad news” - Douglas Adams

[COMMENT]The [George Zimmerman] trial is a complete media created hype. Every radio station and every show has talked about it. [Sean Hannity] even had an interview with him and that interview was played in open court as part of the case. It's about race, period. There are a lot of people in this world, politicians especially that want to be able to divide people for there own agenda, and demonetization of the right. It's race baiting. There are thousands of cases all over this country everyday, even down the street from you at your local courthouse that are about people being convicted of murder using race as the reason for it. A few years ago I was on a jury that convicted two gang members in a twin murder trial. Ever heard about that? These two guys drove up and down a street and shot a guy they thought was a gang member. Turns out he wasn't. Glad to see those a-holes go to jail for a long time. But soo what? There are hundreds if not thousands of these cases everyday. The media sets up these kind of race based stories because they think it gets ratings, it does. Turns out Radio and TV are in the advertising business. If you are sucked into this kind of thing your not paying enough attention. You are being manipulated. Props to [Hugh Hewitt] at KRLA who has established a Zimmerman free zone. Hugh went on and on about how it's a waste of airtime.... "there is something wrong with you if you think this is important". I

[RADIO]Radio this week is so unlistenable with some exceptions. I have been turning on the classical station to just take a breath from all the horrible news mixed in with almost every host obsessed with the Zimmerman trial. One exciting thing was [Mark Levin's] announcement of his new book, The Liberty Amendments: Restoring the American Republic. Mark explained a way that we can go around Congress to change our future. He said that Washington will not change themselves. A little known part of article 5 in the Constitution gives back power to the states and takes away power from Congress to amend the Constitution. I think Mark is the smartest host out there and it's like a college course listening to him.

Then one interesting interview on public radio's great show Marketplace with Ted Sarandos, chief content officer at Netflix. He talks about what Netflix is up to and their strategy. They have a new show, that was created for Netflix called "Orange is the New Black" and just started Wednesday night. You can listen to the 4 1/2 minute story:
